The Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) welcome the commitment to a 3-month review exploring pathways towards an independent Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee (RTAC) strengthened state-based regulation and the potential benefits of a national regulatory approach.
Currently, ART and IVF services in Australia are governed by more than 40 separate pieces of legislation. This fragmented framework creates inconsistency, confusion, and gaps in oversight. FSANZ has long maintained that this is unsustainable.
Our 10-Year Fertility Roadmap, released in November and shared with all Australian Health Ministers, clearly outlines our support for transitioning RTAC into an independent statutory authority. Such a move would deliver greater regulatory clarity, enhance accountability, and give the accreditation system the agility needed to maintain high standards and address emerging risks.
A nationally consistent approach to ART regulation would improve transparency, streamline governance, and enhance patient care across jurisdictions. It would also strengthen national data collection, enable benchmarking, and support continuous improvement across the sector.
We look forward to working closely with all levels of government as we progress these shared goals and shape a future-focused, trusted framework for fertility care in Australia.
