Statement on behalf of The Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand

Thursday 12, Jun 2025

The Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) acknowledges the resignation of Monash IVF CEO, Michael Knaap. FSANZ recognises the contributions to the fertility sector that Mr Knaap has made since his appointment in 2019 and appreciates the complexity of the events that have led to his decision to resign.

The recent incidents at Monash IVF highlight the complexity and sensitivity of assisted reproductive technology (ART). Incidents like this demand full transparency, rigorous investigation, and a sector-wide commitment to learning and improvement. The trust patients place in our profession is sacred, and we must continually earn it through clear governance, shared responsibility, and action

As the sector's peak body, FSANZ continues to advocate for Australian Federal and State Governments to commit to a nationally consistent framework, to replace more than 40 jurisdictional laws, as well as crucially establishing the Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee (RTAC) as an independent statutory authority to strengthen oversight and trust in the broader sector.

A national approach to ART would strengthen transparency, streamline governance, and enhance patient care across the country. It would also support better data collection, benchmarking, and sector-wide continuous improvement.
