The Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) is pleased to release the final report: Findings, Recommendations, and Framework for an Australian 10-Year Fertility Roadmap.
Commissioned by FSANZ and authored by former Federal Health Minister, Professor the Hon. Greg Hunt, and Dr. Rachel Swift, D.Phil in Embryology and Rhodes Scholar, this report is the product of extensive consultation across the fertility sector, government, and the wider public. Through submissions and interviews, key stakeholders from Australia and New Zealand have provided invaluable insights that have shaped the report’s recommendations.
At its core, the roadmap calls for a National Fertility Plan (Recommendation 35) to provide a cohesive and forward-looking strategy for fertility care in Australia. Key pillars of this plan include:
FSANZ also welcomes the Australian Government’s recent announcement on Genomics Australia, which aligns seamlessly with Recommendation 31 of the roadmap. This recommendation calls for an Expanded National Carrier Screening Program — ensuring all Australian parents have access to screening for conditions proposed under Mackenzie’s Mission. Alternatively, we advocate for the expansion of the Medicare-funded carrier screening model based on the MRFF-funded Mackenzie’s Mission Research Program. In parallel, access to preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) should be expanded for couples identified as carrying a listed condition.
This roadmap sets a bold vision for the future of fertility care in Australia. FSANZ looks forward to working with policymakers, clinicians, and the community to bring these recommendations to life.
